From Angoulême, by cruising 9 hrs westwards, you’ll find our base of Jarnac from where it is only another 2.5 hours to the city of Cognac, famous for its brandy distillery. On a return cruise from Angoulême, we would advise turning around here if you wish to cruise at a comfortable pace. However, if you book a one-way between Angoulême and Jarnac, we recommend travelling as far as Saintes before turning around and heading back to Jarnac.

Charente angling vacations are a favourite amongst many! Carp, pike, bream, roach, chub and black bass are all present in the river. The fishing is great in Jarnac, especially for roach. Stroll half a kilometer from the quay to a great spot for a fishing picnic!
Family
Take the kids cycling along the shaded towpath and explore pretty Charente villages! For a pleasant outing, rent canoes and kayaks at the watersports base in Angoulême. The town also has a good comic book museum. The kids’ll love gabarre rides at St. Simon!

The river Charente is a beautiful waterway, especially the further upstream you go. There is so much wildlife, and the water is very clean. There are not many commercial operators on the river, and nor are there many private boats, the reason being is that it is not linked to the French waterway system. This means that moorings are not overcrowded and you rarely need to queue for locks. Jarnac is an easily accessible base, and you have the choice of taking the easy option, with fewer locks downstream, or the prettier way upstream, but the locks are harder.
