LOCKS AND LIFTING BRIDGES

There are four ways to pass a lock or a lifting bridge in the Netherlands. The required method will be clearly displayed on site as you approach. There are four different ways to pass a bridge/lock:

1. Lock or bridge will operate automatically using sensors.

2. Operation will commence by pressing a button.

3. Call the lock/bridge keeper (numbers are indicated on the bridge/lock).

4. The bridges are camera operated, please wait close to the bridge.

Locks and bridges are almost always free of charge. Keep €1 – €3 in change handy to throw into the basket as you pass if you’d like to tip a lock/bridge keeper along the way.

Arrive at base

2pm-5pm

After you have arrived and checked-in, we’ll show you to your boat as quickly as possible. Spend time settling in, freshen up and await your pre-departure briefing which will be given by one of our base technicians. They will familiarise you with the boat’s domestic systems and give you a hands-on demonstration of the boat controls and how to operate it. They will make sure you are comfortable and confident controlling the boat, as well as navigating the waterway, before you set off.

Vinkenveen > Amsterdam

Vinkeveen > Amsterdam

9am-12.30pm

Approx. 3 hr 30 mins | 1 lock | 1 lifting bridge

From the Le Boat base, your journey starts by passing under the Demmerikse Brug (bridge 777b). The lock operator will assist you as you make your way through. Please note: Vision, Horizon, and Consul boat types cannot pass under this bridge. If you’re on one of these boats, make sure to call +31 (0) 62 787 9860 for bridge opening times: 09:00 – 12:30 | 13:30 – 16:30 | 17:30 – 20:00. All other boat types can pass under the bridge, but ensure all crew are below deck with hatches and doors closed. When steering from the top deck, you’ll need to kneel and bend down, as there’s only about 10cm of clearance from the steering wheel.

Once through, take a left into Demmerikse lock (777a). After the lock, follow the Geuzensloot and turn right onto the Angstel. As you near the end of the river, pass under the Spoorbrug and be cautious when turning onto the busy Amsterdam Rijnkanaal. With around 100,000 ships annually, including fast-moving barges, wait for a clear and safe passage before turning left and heading north toward Amsterdam.

Once reaching the Mond van het Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, continue straight toward the IJ River and stay to the right and enter Sixhaven Marina.

To explore Amsterdam, moor at Six Haven Marina, conveniently located across from Central Station. From there, hop on the free ferry to the city center – bicycles are welcome onboard at no extra cost. This operates around the clock. Plan your ferry trip: gvb.nl/en

Amsterdam Marina is situated slightly west of Six Haven Marina, on the north bank of the IJ, near the NDSM wharf. Both offer convenient mooring options with easy access to the city centre.

  • Lock: Demmerikse Sluis (777a) – +31 (0) 29 726 2540 | +31 (0) 62 787 9860
  • Lifting bridge: Demmerikse Brug (777a) – + 31 (0) 29 726 2540 | +31 (0) 62 787 9860

Navigation rules while on the Amsterdam Rijnkanaal:

The big barges will always overtake you and you MUST always let them pass.

Make sure that everything is secured inside and outside of your boat (bikes, chairs, dishes, phones, bottles etc). There can be some big waves when you are overtaken by a barge and things on the boat can move around, so it is important that everything is securely fastened down.

Always keep to the right – leave one boat length between you and the shore.

Regularly look behind to know where other boats and barges are.

The big barges always have priority (right of way).

10 night alternative

With an extra three nights on board, we recommend extending your stay in Amsterdam at the start of your trip and enjoying more time in Utrecht towards the end. Followed by a scenic cruise up the Vecht River to the charming town of Breukelen.

To extend your time in Amsterdam, cycle its lively neighborhoods and visit the world-class museums, and cultural landmarks. Unwind with a cold beer at the Heineken Experience or Brouwerij ‘t IJ, a brewery next to the country’s tallest windmill, De Gooyer. Or for a culinary treat, indulge in one of Amsterdam’s numerous Michelin-starred restaurants.

Later in your trip when you find yourself at the overnight mooring Passantenhaven Nieuwegein, take the bus in and make a full day of your time in Utrecht. Wander through its medieval streets, climb the Dom Tower for panoramic views, and relax at a canal-side café.

A 10 night trip will also allow you time to cruise up the Vecht River towards Breukelen. Make your way through the Vechtsluis lock from the Amsterdam-Rijnkanal and enjoy the scenic route towards Breukelen. Once there, enjoy a walk around the park of Castle Gunterstein, explore Galerie Peter Leen XL, or enjoy a glass of wine at Wine Bar ‘t Stichtse Pakhuis. When you’re ready, retrace your route and moor off at the Municipality of Stichtse Vecht in Maarssen, an ideal place for a leisurely stop before making your way back through the Vechtsluis lock and back onto the Amsterdam Rijnkanaal towards Vinkeveen.
